Story of silk

Did you know that silk has been around for over 5000 years? Silk is originally from China and was exclusively reserved for royalty. Its high demand created a trade route now known as the Silk Road which was about 4000 miles long going from Eastern China to the Mediterranean Sea. Silk was even more precious than gold so the East traded silk to the West, for gold, silver and wool. It is said that sericulture (silk production) was kept a secret in China for over 30 centuries. Other countries have since then become important silk producers. As of 2014, the six largest silk producing countries are China (~82%), India (~16%), Uzbekistan (~0.6%), Thailand (~0.4%), Brazil (~0.3%) and Vietnam (~0.2%). Silk facts:...
